Other contemporary tombs display similar themes. The painted mold-impressed bricks found at Dengxian, also in Henan, attributed to the early sixth century,54 feature the Sages of Southern Mountain: surrounded by mountains, they sit in the foreground playing musical instruments. On another brick a seated, courtly gentleman plays the sheng, a wind instrument, which elicits a dancing phoenix at center and to the right a standing shaman holds a feathered fan. This theme of the ethereal nature of music echoes portrayals of the Seven Sages.
